EASE OF PRODUCTION LEADS TO A DIMINISHED SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY - ABUNDANCE LEADS TO PERFUNCTORINESS
Warli & Weave
Curated for the V&A Museum of Childhood in November 2008, this exhibition addressed two tribal
craft areas of practice from India, looking in particular at the ways in which children acquired craft
skills from within their family group. It sought to challenge the media representation of South Asian
childrens' engagement with craft as being a negative, sweatshop activity, as well as highlighting the
degrees of skill inherent in each process. Signature Warli paintings by Jivya Soma Mashe and
Ramesh Hengade were juxtaposed with weaving by Dayal Vankar and other families from Kutch.
